Come Taste the Band
Come Taste the Band is Deep Purple's tenth studio album, released in November 1975 on Warner Bros. Records. It is the only studio record by the Mark IV line-up, with Tommy Bolin on guitar alongside David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, and the only Purple album without either Ian Gillan or Ritchie Blackmore. The band co-produced it with longtime associate Martin Birch, who also engineered.
It was the last studio album before the band split in 1976, and it leans harder into funk than anything before it. It peaked at number 19 in the UK and number 43 in the US, a softer showing than their earlier 1970s records, though reviewers welcomed the fresh direction. Its standing has stayed mixed, and members of the line-up have themselves questioned how far it counts as Deep Purple. For anyone curious about the band in transition, it is well worth hearing.
