Who Do We Think We Are
Who Do We Think We Are is Deep Purple's seventh studio album, released in January 1973. It followed Machine Head and turned out to be the last record by the Mark II line-up, with singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover, until they came back together for Perfect Strangers in 1984. The band were clearly under strain, with Gillan later recalling that they had all been through major illnesses and felt worn out.
Musically, it leans towards a more blues-based sound, and even takes in some scat singing. Despite the turmoil around it, the album sold well, and Deep Purple were the top-selling artist in the US in 1973. The standout is the driving single "Woman from Tokyo", which hardly featured in their live sets during the 1970s but became a concert staple from the 1984 reunion onwards.
