California Jamming
California Jamming is a live Deep Purple album, released in 1996 on EMI Premier. It captures the band's set at the California Jam Festival on 6 April 1974, recorded for ABC-TV to show in prime time and broadcast on radio over four weekends that month. It is a snapshot of the third line-up, with David Coverdale on vocals and Glenn Hughes on bass and vocals, still early in their time together.
The show ended in chaos. Ritchie Blackmore smashed a network video camera that had kept getting between him and the crowd, then had his amplifiers soaked in petrol and set alight, causing an explosion. The 1996 release is missing "Lay Down, Stay Down", which returned when the complete concert was reissued in remastered form as Just Might Take Your Life in 2003. For anyone curious about the Coverdale and Hughes era on stage, this is where to start.
