Deep Purple
Deep Purple's self-titled third album came out in 1969 on Harvest. It was the last of three records by the band's first line-up, and the one that sold least. Critics ignored it at the time. It was preceded by the single "Emmaretta" and made between dates on a long UK tour.
The music mixes progressive, hard and psychedelic rock, with more guitar than before. Ritchie Blackmore was growing as a songwriter, and the band were pulling against Jon Lord's blend of classical music and rock. During a US tour, with no album to promote, the group moved towards a heavier, louder sound. Doubts over Rod Evans led to Ian Gillan and Roger Glover joining, replacing Evans and Nick Simper. Later reviews tend to be kind, praising the range of styles and the boldness of the arrangements.
