Album
The Battle Rages On…
The Battle Rages On… is Deep Purple's fourteenth studio album, released in July 1993. It brought back the classic Mk II line-up, with Ian Gillan returning for a second spell, and it turned out to be the last record that line-up made. Gillan came back in late 1992, after Joe Lynn Turner had been fired during the early sessions and Mike DiMeo had briefly been chosen to replace him. Jon Lord, Ian Paice and Roger Glover pushed for the change, as did the band's management and record company.
The album is also Ritchie Blackmore's farewell. Gillan reworked much of the material written with other singers in mind, and Blackmore reportedly disliked the results, preferring the more melodic originals. He left for the second and final time after a show in Helsinki on 17 November 1993, and Joe Satriani stepped in for the rest of the tour. For anyone following the band's story, it is a record made at a turning point, with a famous line-up pulling in different directions.
