Pablo Honey
Pablo Honey is Radiohead's debut album, released on 22 February 1993 on Parlophone. The band had formed at Abingdon School in Oxfordshire in 1985 and signed to EMI in 1991. Their earlier EP, Drill, had made little impression, so management aimed squarely at America and brought in American producers Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie, working with co-manager Chris Hufford. The record was made in three weeks at Chipping Norton Recording Studios, and the band's lack of studio experience made the sessions harder.
It is the album that gave the world "Creep", which slowly built international radio play and reached number seven in the UK after its 1993 reissue. It remains their biggest single. The band themselves have been critical of the songwriting, and the album sits well below their later work in standing. Even so, it reached number 22 in the UK and went platinum in the US. It is worth hearing as the starting point, before The Bends changed the picture.
