Stereopathetic Soulmanure
Stereopathetic Soulmanure is Beck's second studio album, released on 22 February 1994 by Flipside Records. It is a sprawling, lo-fi patchwork rather than a tidy collection of songs: home recordings sit beside studio sessions, live performances, field recordings, sound collages and abstract noise experiments, all with a strong folk influence running underneath.
It arrived early in his story, as his third official recording after Golden Feelings and A Western Harvest Field by Moonlight, and it is largely anti-commercial in spirit. Within the year came Mellow Gold and the mostly acoustic One Foot in the Grave, with Odelay following in 1996. For anyone who knows Beck mainly from that later success, this is a fascinating look at the untidy, experimental workshop he emerged from.
