Dookie
Dookie is Green Day's third studio album, released on 1 February 1994 by Reprise Records. It followed 39/Smooth and Kerplunk! and was the band's first work with producer Rob Cavallo, recorded in 1993 in Berkeley and Hollywood. Billie Joe Armstrong wrote most of it from personal experience, and the songs deal with boredom, anxiety, relationships and sexuality. "Longview", "Basket Case", "When I Come Around" and a re-recorded "Welcome to Paradise" were released as singles.
Coming after years of grunge dominance, it brought a livelier, more melodic sound into the mainstream and made Green Day a worldwide name. Some early fans balked at the move from Lookout! Records and the glossier production, but critics were warm, and the album won the Grammy for Best Alternative Album in 1995. It has sold over 20 million copies and was added to the US National Recording Registry in 2024.
