Kerplunk!
Kerplunk! is Green Day's second studio album, released on 17 December 1991 through Lookout! Records. It is the first record to feature drummer Tré Cool, who stepped in after John Kiffmeyer left to go to college following the tour for their debut, 39/Smooth. The band recorded at Art of Ears Studios in San Francisco with Andy Ernst, stopping after six songs to go back on the road, then returning in September 1991 to finish the job.
The songs are pop punk through and through, dealing with love, boredom, alienation and Billie Joe Armstrong's subconscious. Critics welcomed the album, and several singled out what Cool brought to the band's sound. It sold 10,000 copies on its first day in the UK thanks to pre-orders, and became the biggest seller in Lookout's catalogue. After Dookie, it topped the Billboard Top Pop Catalog Albums chart, and it has since gone platinum in the US and gold in the UK.
