1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours is a Green Day compilation released in 1991 on Lookout Records. It gathers the band's earliest recordings in one place: their first album, 39/Smooth, from 1990, plus the two EPs that came before it, 1,000 Hours from 1989 and Slappy from 1990. The title is a mash-up of those three releases. Because it is the first Green Day record many people came across, it is often mistaken for their debut album.
For anyone tracing the band back before Dookie, it is a handy starting point, showing the trio at their rawest on the way to Kerplunk!. It includes a cover of "Knowledge" by Operation Ivy, and Operation Ivy singer Jesse Michaels supplied the artwork. Lookout reissued it in 2004 with enhanced CD-ROM extras, including live performances and photographs. Reprise brought it out again in 2007.
