1,000 Hours
1,000 Hours is Green Day's debut EP, released on 26 May 1989 through Lookout! Records. Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt, school friends who bonded over music, had formed Sweet Children and added drummer John Kiffmeyer. They built a following at the Berkeley punk club 924 Gilman Street, and after a show with the Lookouts, that band's Larry Livermore signed them to his label.
The EP was co-produced with Andy Ernst at Art of Ears Studio in San Francisco in early 1989, and critics praised the production quality. The band changed its name to Green Day before release, a move Livermore thought would make copies hard to shift. Their first show under the new name came in May 1989, supporting Operation Ivy at Gilman. The EP later appeared on the 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours compilation in 1991, alongside their other early releases.
