39/Smooth is Green Day's debut studio album, released on 13 April 1990 on Lookout Records. The band had built a following at the 924 Gilman Street venue, which brought them to the attention of Lookout's founder, Larry Livermore. They recorded it at Art of Ears Studio in San Francisco with Andy Ernst, in sessions running from late December 1989 into January 1990 and costing $675. It follows their 1989 EP 1,000 Hours and is the only Green Day album with drummer John Kiffmeyer.

Billie Joe Armstrong wrote most of the songs, mainly about unrequited love and longing, with two looking back on youth. The sound is punk rock and pop punk, with echoes of the Buzzcocks and the Ramones. It sits near the lower end of most rankings of the band's catalogue, but it shows where they began, a few years before Kerplunk! and Dookie.
