Album
Insomniac
Insomniac is Green Day's fourth studio album, released in October 1995 on Reprise Records. It arrived as the follow-up to Dookie, the multi-platinum record that had made the band a household name, and it answers that success by going harder and darker. Recorded at Hyde Street in San Francisco, it was made with a focus on high-energy takes, and you can hear that urgency in the playing.
The songs deal with alienation, anxiety, boredom and drug use, all delivered with the sarcastic humour that critics singled out in Billie Joe Armstrong's writing. "Geek Stink Breath", "Stuck with Me", "Brain Stew / Jaded" and "Walking Contradiction" were released as singles. It reached number 2 on the Billboard 200 and went 2× Platinum in the US, though its abrasive edge meant it never matched Dookie's staying power. That rougher character is a good reason to go back to it.
