In Rainbows
In Rainbows is Radiohead's seventh studio album, released on 10 October 2007. It was their first record after their EMI contract ended with Hail to the Thief, and they put it out themselves as a download, letting fans choose what to pay. No one had seen a major act do that before, and it divided opinion: some applauded the new way of reaching listeners, others worried about the precedent for less successful artists. XL Recordings followed with a retail release that December.
The making of it was a long haul. Work began in early 2005, and after sessions with Spike Stent came to nothing, the band went back to their regular producer, Nigel Godrich. They recorded in country houses, a London club and their Oxfordshire studio. The lyrics turn away from the politics of earlier records towards something more personal. It topped the charts in the UK and US and won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. "Jigsaw Falling into Place" and "Nude" were the singles.
