Kid A
Kid A is Radiohead's fourth studio album, released on 2 October 2000. It followed OK Computer and marked a sharp turn away from the band's earlier sound. Working with producer Nigel Godrich in Paris, Copenhagen, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, they drew on electronic music, krautrock, jazz and 20th-century classical music, using a wider range of instruments and effects. Thom Yorke wrote abstract lyrics by cutting up phrases and arranging them at random.
The campaign was as unusual as the music. There were no singles and few interviews, with short animations and early use of the internet doing the promotional work. It still went to number one in the UK and gave the band their first US number one. Some listeners found it pretentious or obscure, but it later topped Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and The Times lists for the best album of the 2000s, and it won the Grammy for Best Alternative Album.
