Renegades
Renegades is Rage Against the Machine's fourth and final studio album, released on 5 December 2000 through Epic. Rather than writing new material, the band turned to other people's songs, taking on Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Afrika Bambaataa, Minor Threat, Eric B. & Rakim, the Stooges, MC5, the Rolling Stones, Cypress Hill and Devo, among others. The sleeve borrows from Robert Indiana's Love artwork series.
It follows Rage Against the Machine, Evil Empire and The Battle of Los Angeles, and it closes the story in an unusual way. The band had split almost two months before it appeared, so there was no tour to go with it. It still went platinum a little over a month after release. Shortly afterwards, everyone but vocalist Zack de la Rocha formed Audioslave with former Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell. For anyone curious how these players hear punk, hip-hop and protest-minded rock, the track list makes a revealing map.
