People of the Sun EP
"People of the Sun" was released in 1996 as an EP on Revelation Records, built around the second single from Evil Empire, the band's second studio album. The song dates back to 1992, when Zack de la Rocha wrote it after a visit to Chiapas in southern Mexico, and it deals with the Zapatista revolution.
Lyrically it ranges widely, taking in the Spanish destruction of the Aztec Empire, the torture and execution of the last Aztec emperor, Cuauhtémoc, and the Zoot Suit Riots of Los Angeles in 1943. The cover uses Tina Modotti's 1927 photograph of corn, a sickle and an ammunition belt. The song earned a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1998, losing to The Smashing Pumpkins.
