All Hope Is Gone
All Hope Is Gone is Slipknot's fourth studio album, released on 26 August 2008 through Roadrunner Records. Work began in 2007, and recording got under way in February 2008 in the band's home state of Iowa. It followed Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) and was the last album to feature the Iowa-era line-up, with bassist Paul Gray and drummer Joey Jordison both on board. It was also their first record to top the Billboard 200.
What makes it worth hearing is its range. It draws on all three earlier albums, so the brutal, death metal-tinged attack of "Gematria (The Killing Name)" and the title track sits alongside the slow-burning, trippy "Gehenna" and the sadder, more sentimental "Dead Memories" and "Snuff". Lyrics deal with anger, disaffection, obsession and the music industry, with politics more to the fore than before. A special edition added three bonus tracks and a documentary DVD about the recording.
