Slipknot's self-titled debut arrived on 29 June 1999 on Roadrunner Records, building on a 1998 demo that previewed a few of its songs. It was the band's first work with producer Ross Robinson, who aimed to sharpen their sound rather than steer them somewhere new. It is also the only album to feature original guitarist Josh Brainard, who left once recording wrapped in late 1998. Jim Root played on one track and joined full time for the follow-up, Iowa.

Though it draws on several styles, the record is best known for its heavy sound and thick layers of percussion. A lawsuit led to a reissue in December 1999 with a slightly altered track listing and new mastering. It peaked at number 51 on the Billboard 200 and went on to triple platinum in the US, making it the band's biggest seller. Metal Hammer readers named it the best debut of the previous 25 years in 2011, and "(sic)" has been singled out as one of metal's great openers.
