Californication
Californication is the seventh studio album by Red Hot Chili Peppers, released on 8 June 1999 on Warner Bros. Records. Rick Rubin produced it, and it brought guitarist John Frusciante back into the band after his earlier spells on Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik. His return coincided with a change of direction, and the group's softer, more melodic side came to the fore.
The band's trademark sexual innuendo is still here, but it sits alongside darker and broader themes: death, suicide, drugs, globalization, travel and California itself. Rolling Stone's Greg Tate described it as daring to be "spiritual and epiphanic". It produced "Otherside", the title track and the Grammy-winning "Scar Tissue", reached number three on the US Billboard 200, and has sold more than 17 million copies worldwide, making it the band's biggest studio success.
