The Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Red Hot Chili Peppers is the band's debut studio album, released on 10 August 1984 through EMI America and Enigma Records. Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill produced it, which is a neat pairing of angular post-punk sensibility with the group's funk-driven rock. Anthony Kiedis sings and Flea plays bass, with Cliff Martinez on drums.
It is also a one-off in the band's catalogue. Jack Sherman is the guitarist here, standing in for founding member Hillel Slovak, who had left along with original drummer Jack Irons before recording began. After the tour, Sherman was dismissed and Slovak returned. For anyone tracing how the Peppers became the band of Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Californication, this is where the story starts, in a line-up that never appeared again.
