Album
Death Magnetic
Death Magnetic is Metallica's ninth studio album, released on 12 September 2008. It followed the rawer, divisive St. Anger (2003) and was widely heard as a return to the band's thrash roots, with more intricate arrangements, standard tuning on most songs and long solos from Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield. Rick Rubin produced, the first time since ...And Justice for All that Bob Rock had not been in the chair, and it was the first Metallica record to feature bassist Robert Trujillo.
It is worth hearing for "Suicide & Redemption", the band's first fully instrumental piece since "Orion" on Master of Puppets. The album made Metallica the first band with five consecutive US number ones on the Billboard 200 and won three Grammys, including Best Metal Performance for "My Apocalypse". Critics praised the songwriting, though the heavily compressed production drew complaints as a loudness war casualty.
