This is a live album recorded by Metallica at The Fillmore in San Francisco on 7 December 2011. It came out in December 2011, in the same month as the show itself, which makes it a quick snapshot of the band at that moment.
It arrived after Death Magnetic (2008) and Lulu (2011), and well before Hardwired… to Self-Destruct (2016). Choosing San Francisco's Fillmore as the venue gives it a sense of occasion for a band with deep roots in the Bay Area. It is one for fans who like their Metallica captured in a single night rather than polished in a studio.
