Album
St. Anger
St. Anger is Metallica's eighth studio album, released on 5 June 2003 through Vertigo in the UK and Europe. It arrived five days ahead of schedule because of worries about unlicensed file sharing. Recording began in April 2001 but stopped when James Hetfield entered rehab, and it only picked up again in May 2002. Jason Newsted had left before the sessions, so producer Bob Rock played bass. Robert Trujillo joined once it was finished.
It is also the sound of a band tearing up its own template: raw production, a metallic drum sound and no guitar solos, with a leaning towards alternative metal. It was Rock's last album with the band after working together since 1990. Reviews were mixed, yet it debuted at number one in 14 countries, and the title track won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance. The making of it is told in the documentary Metallica: Some Kind of Monster.
