Train of Thought
Train of Thought is Dream Theater's seventh studio album, released on 11 November 2003 through Elektra. It follows Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence from 2002 and comes before Octavarium in 2005. The New York band had noticed how audiences responded to their heavier songs on tour, and the record grew from that. Mike Portnoy described the aim as a "balls to the wall" album, with darker, harder riffing that might win over a new crowd of metal fans.
The writing took just three weeks. Doug Oberkircher engineered the album and Kevin Shirley mixed it. It is a good place to hear the band at their most forceful, and the songs have lasted well on stage: most of the album was played for the Live at Budokan DVD, and every track has since been performed live.
