Dream Theater are an American progressive metal band who formed in Boston in 1985. Guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung and drummer Mike Portnoy, all from Long Island, started out as Majesty while studying at Berklee College of Music, then left to focus on the band. Singer James LaBrie joined in 1991, and keyboardist Jordan Rudess arrived in 1999. Petrucci and Myung have been there throughout, and Portnoy returned in October 2023 after leaving in 2010.

Their second album, Images and Words (1992), is their biggest seller and reached No. 61 on the Billboard 200. Awake (1994) and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002) were also well received, while Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999) made Classic Rock's list of great concept albums. Octavarium and Train of Thought are among the records fans return to most. They are often named alongside Queensrÿche and Fates Warning as a progressive metal "big three".
