Porcupine Tree are an English progressive rock band formed by Steven Wilson in 1987. They began as his solo project, with Wilson creating all the music himself, before he brought in Richard Barbieri on keyboards, Colin Edwin on bass and Chris Maitland on drums to make a proper band by late 1993. Gavin Harrison replaced Maitland in February 2002. Their early records drifted through psychedelic, space and experimental rock, then settled into a Pink Floyd-like progressive space rock approach.

The sound shifted again as the band moved towards mainstream alternative rock after signing to Kscope in the late 1990s, and towards progressive metal once a major label signed them in the early 2000s. In Absentia, Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet are the albums most people start with. After The Incident in 2009 and its tour, the band went quiet, but Wilson, Barbieri and Harrison kept working in secret, and Closure / Continuation arrived in 2022.
