Deadwing is Porcupine Tree's eighth studio album, following In Absentia and arriving ahead of Fear of a Blank Planet. It came out in March 2005 on Lava and quickly became the band's best seller, until its successor overtook it. The songs grew out of a ghost story screenplay that Steven Wilson wrote with Mike Bennion. When the film couldn't find funding, material intended for its soundtrack, including the title track, "Lazarus" and "Open Car", was recorded for the band instead.

The guest list is a draw in itself. Adrian Belew of King Crimson plays guitar solos on the title track and "Halo", while Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt adds vocal harmonies and a second solo on "Arriving Somewhere but Not Here". "Shallow" and "Lazarus" were released as singles, and "Shallow" turned up in the film Four Brothers. A 2018 remaster through Kscope brought less compression and clearer sound.
