Up the Downstair
Up the Downstair is the second studio album by Porcupine Tree, the English progressive rock band, and it came out on Delerium Records on 7 June 1993. It followed On the Sunday of Life… (1992) and sits early in a catalogue that would grow to include The Sky Moves Sideways and Signify. Originally it was planned as a double album. "Voyage 34" went out as a single in 1992 instead, and other material from the sessions ended up on the Staircase Infinities EP in 1994.
The sound blends progressive and psychedelic rock, and Steven Wilson has said he was drawing on the Orb and the Future Sound of London as well as Pink Floyd and Ozric Tentacles. In 2005 the album was partly re-recorded, remixed and remastered, with new drums from Gavin Harrison replacing the original electronic ones, and paired with Staircase Infinities as a double album. A coloured double vinyl edition followed on Kscope in 2008.
