Album
13
13 is Black Sabbath's nineteenth and final studio album, released on 7 June 2013. It arrived 18 years after Forbidden, the longest gap of their career, and reunited Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Tony Iommi in the studio. Bill Ward stayed out following a contractual dispute, so Brad Wilk of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave took the drum stool. Rick Rubin produced, having first started work with the band back in 2001.
Critics praised the songwriting and playing, though the album was also cited as an example of the loudness war, its sound heavily compressed. "God Is Dead?" won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2014, and the record reached number one in the UK and US. For anyone who loved the early Sabbath sound, it makes a fitting last chapter.
