Dream Theater
Dream Theater's self-titled twelfth studio album came out on 23 September 2013 through Roadrunner Records. The American progressive metal band wrote, recorded, mixed and mastered it between January and May 2013 at Cove City Sound Studios on Long Island, the same room that produced A Dramatic Turn of Events in 2011. It was the first record where drummer Mike Mangini joined in the songwriting. Naming it after themselves was a deliberate move: a marker of forward momentum and a reference point for fans.
Most of the songs run shorter than the band's usual, with the 22-minute closer "Illumination Theory" the big exception. Some tracks carry organic strings arranged by Berklee student Eren Başbuğ, and two instrumentals, "False Awakening Suite" and "Enigma Machine", are their first on a studio album since Train of Thought in 2003. Lyrics drew on real events, including the Boston Marathon bombings. "The Enemy Inside" earned a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance.
