Once in a LIVEtime
Once in a LIVEtime is Dream Theater's second live release, put out by EastWest on 27 October 1998. It was recorded by Kevin Shirley, who also produced it, at the Bataclan theatre in Paris during the European leg of the Touring into Infinity tour. That tour followed Falling Into Infinity, the studio album released the year before, and this record captures the band on the road in the wake of it.
One guest turn is worth listening out for: Jay Beckenstein of Spyro Gyra adds alto saxophone to "Take Away My Pain". He had already played on "Another Day" from Images and Words, so it's a nice reunion. The sleeve is by Storm Thorgerson, who places an overhead view of the Roman theatre in Orange, France, inside the head of a monk. As with Falling Into Infinity, the band's usual logo is missing.
