The Great Southern Trendkill
The Great Southern Trendkill is Pantera's eighth studio album, released on 7 May 1996. It followed Far Beyond Driven and was the last record made with producer Terry Date, who had worked with the band since Cowboys from Hell in 1990. The sessions were split: Phil Anselmo recorded his vocals alone at Trent Reznor's Nothing Studios in New Orleans, while Dimebag Darrell, Rex Brown and Vinnie Paul tracked the music at Chasin Jason Studios in Dalworthington Gardens.
That separation fits the mood of the time. Tension ran high in the band, and Anselmo's heroin addiction threatened to pull it apart. The album reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200, charted in several other countries and went platinum in the US. Reviews were positive, though it divided listeners more than earlier Pantera records. For anyone who wants the groove metal band at a fraught, uncompromising point in their story, it is well worth hearing.
