Pantera are a Texan heavy metal band who formed in Arlington in 1981, built around brothers Dimebag Darrell on guitar and Vinnie Paul on drums. They began as a glam metal outfit, making three albums in the mid-1980s with singer Terry Glaze before bassist Rex Brown and, from 1986, vocalist Phil Anselmo completed the line-up most people remember. Power Metal followed in 1988, and a deal with Atco came the year after.

The heavier, groove-driven sound arrived with Cowboys from Hell in 1990, which the band count as their true debut, and deepened on Vulgar Display of Power in 1992. Far Beyond Driven went straight to number one on the Billboard 200 in 1994. The Great Southern Trendkill followed in 1996, recorded with the band under strain, and Reinventing the Steel closed the run in 2000. They split in 2003. Dimebag Darrell was killed in 2004, and Vinnie Paul died in 2018. Brown and Anselmo reunited the band in 2022 with Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante.
