Sepultura

Sepultura formed in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 1984, started by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera. They began as a raw death and thrash outfit, and their 1986 debut Morbid Visions was followed a year later by Schizophrenia. That second record caught the attention of Roadrunner Records, who signed them in 1988.

Beneath the Remains (1989) brought the international breakthrough, and Arise, Chaos A.D. and Roots then made them one of the most successful metal bands of the 1990s. Along the way their sound took in groove metal, hardcore punk, industrial textures and world music. Max left in 1996 and was replaced by Derrick Green; Igor departed in 2006. Guitarist Andreas Kisser and bassist Paulo Jr. carry on, and the band began a farewell tour in March 2024. Roots and Chaos A.D. remain the usual places to start.
