Deftones

Deftones formed in Sacramento, California, in 1988, built around singer Chino Moreno, guitarist Stephen Carpenter and drummer Abe Cunningham. Bassist Chi Cheng arrived in 1990 and turntablist and keyboardist Frank Delgado in 1999. Their sound began in alternative metal, with touches of nu metal, alternative rock and shoegaze, and it grew steadily more experimental over time.

After signing to Maverick Records, they released Adrenaline in 1995 and built a loyal following through relentless touring. Around the Fur (1997) went platinum in the US, and White Pony (2000) shifted them towards a more adventurous sound; "Elite" won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance. Chi Cheng's 2008 car accident halted work on an album called Eros, and Sergio Vega later joined on bass. Diamond Eyes (2010) and Koi No Yokan (2012) are the best-known records of that second chapter.
