Nine Inch Nails
Nine Inch Nails is the project of Trent Reznor, who formed it in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1988 and remained its only permanent member until his long-time collaborator Atticus Ross joined officially in 2016. Their sound sits where industrial rock meets electronics, with touches of alternative rock and industrial metal. Debut album Pretty Hate Machine arrived in 1989 on TVT Records. A dispute over its promotion led Reznor to Interscope, where he made the EP Broken and then The Downward Spiral and The Fragile.
Those records, along with With Teeth, are the ones fans return to most. After a hiatus came Year Zero, then independent releases such as Ghosts I–IV and The Slip, and later Hesitation Marks and Bad Witch. Live shows are known for elaborate visuals and lighting, with songs often reworked for each performance. The band has won Grammys for "Wish" and "Happiness in Slavery", and entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.
