Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd formed in London in 1965, with Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright in the line-up. David Gilmour arrived in 1967. They first won an underground following as one of Britain's earliest psychedelic groups, standing out for long compositions, studio experiments, philosophical lyrics and elaborate live shows. Barrett wrote the early hits "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play", plus the debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, before leaving in 1968 because of his health.
After a period of experimenting, Waters became the main lyricist and devised the concepts behind The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall, the records most listeners know best. Waters left in 1985, and Gilmour and Mason carried on, later joined again by Wright, making A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell. The final studio album, The Endless River, came out in 2014. Sales exceed 250 million records worldwide.
