Aerosmith formed in Boston in 1970, when guitarist Joe Perry and bassist Tom Hamilton, who had played together in the Jam Band, teamed up with singer Steven Tyler, drummer Joey Kramer and guitarist Ray Tabano. Brad Whitford replaced Tabano in 1971. Their sound is built on blues-based hard rock, with touches of pop rock, glam metal and rhythm and blues. Tyler and Perry's songwriting partnership earned them the nickname the "Toxic Twins".

Toys in the Attic (1975) and Rocks (1976) took them into the mainstream, bringing hits such as "Sweet Emotion" and "Walk This Way". Drug addiction and internal conflict then split the band, but Perry and Whitford returned in 1984. A 1986 remake of "Walk This Way" with Run–D.M.C. and the album Permanent Vacation (1987) revived their fortunes, followed by Pump (1989) and Get a Grip (1993). In 1998 "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" gave them a first number one.
