Ummagumma
Ummagumma is Pink Floyd's double album from 1969, released on 7 November 1969 on Harvest. It splits neatly in two. The first disc captures the band live at Mothers Club in Birmingham and the College of Commerce in Manchester, with material from their regular set of the time. The second hands the floor to each member in turn, with solo pieces recorded at EMI Studios, and it counts as their fourth studio album. It sits between A Saucerful of Secrets and Atom Heart Mother, in a period when the band were pushing at the edges of psychedelic and space rock.
It was well received on release and reached the UK top five, though critics and the band themselves have since been lukewarm about it. Still, it is a curious snapshot of four players pulling in separate directions, and the live disc is the draw for anyone wanting to hear the group on stage. The Hipgnosis sleeve, with its Droste effect of repeating band photographs, is a talking point in itself.
