Album
Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin's debut album, sometimes called Led Zeppelin I, was recorded at Olympic Studios in London in September and October 1968, just after the band formed. Jimmy Page and manager Peter Grant paid for the sessions themselves before any record deal was in place. The whole job took 36 hours and cost £1,782. Page produced, with Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham alongside him, and Glyn Johns mixed the tracks.
The record blends original songs from the first rehearsals with reworked blues and folk numbers, setting out the band's mix of blues and hard rock. It reached the top 10 in both the UK and the US. Page resisted issuing singles, so its long tracks found their audience through album-oriented radio, and many are now classic rock staples. It came out on Atlantic in March 1969.
