David Bowie
David Bowie's second album, released on 14 November 1969, is also known as Space Oddity. Mercury paid for it on the back of the single of that name, a tale of a fictional astronaut that gave Bowie his first hit and reached the UK top five. It was recorded at Trident Studios in London between June and October 1969. Gus Dudgeon produced the single, Tony Visconti the rest, and the session players included Herbie Flowers, Rick Wakeman and Terry Cox, plus the band Junior's Eyes.
It marks a clear move away from the music hall style of his 1967 debut, towards folk rock and psychedelic rock, with songs drawing on past relationships and festivals he had attended. Poor promotion left it a commercial failure at the time, and later reviews have often found it patchy, a view Bowie shared, saying it lacked direction. After Ziggy Stardust, RCA reissued it as Space Oddity, and it charted in both the UK and the US. It's a fascinating record to hear Bowie still finding his way.
