Rare
Rare is a compilation of David Bowie rarities recorded between 1969 and 1980, put out by RCA in 1982. Every track was making its first appearance on LP and cassette, so it gave collectors a way to hear material that had previously been scattered or hard to find. It reached number 34 on the UK Albums Chart and stayed there for eleven weeks.
The release came when Bowie's relationship with RCA was at a low. He had made his last music for the label with the Baal EP, and he was annoyed that a five-year-old duet with Bing Crosby, "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy", had been issued as a single without his consultation. He told RCA he was unhappy with the compilation and said his next album would be for EMI. It sits at the end of his RCA years, just before Let's Dance.
