Early On (1964–1966)
Early On (1964–1966) gathers David Bowie's recordings from before his Deram years, the stretch when he was still finding his feet as a young singer. It came out on Rhino on 17 January 1991 and pulls together material from several labels, including Vocalion, Parlophone and Pye. It remains the only attempt to collect that early work in a comprehensive way.
Some of the contents are rarer than a standard singles round-up. Tracks three and four are alternate versions of the official singles, and "Do Anything You Say" appears in a different mix from the usual single. There are also five unreleased songs drawn from producer Shel Talmy's collection; Talmy worked on Bowie's second and third singles. The cassette edition left out "Liza Jane", "Louie, Louie Go Home" and "Good Morning Girl". For anyone curious about the years before the 1967 debut album, this is the place to start.
