Images 1966–1967
Images 1966–1967 is a double-album compilation of David Bowie's earliest recordings, released in 1973 by London Records in the US. It gathers his 1967 self-titled debut for Deram, along with singles and B-sides cut for the label between 1966 and 1967. Neon Park, known for his artwork on Frank Zappa's Weasels Ripped My Flesh, drew the cartoon sleeve, with characters and scenes from each song.
This is Bowie before glam. The arrangements are mostly orchestral, dressed up with studio sound effects, and shaped by the London cabaret scene and singers such as Anthony Newley. Deram dropped him in 1968, a year before "Space Oddity". The set appeared as Aladdin Sane was lifting his profile in America, where none of the Deram material had been released since 1967, and it gave him a notable hit with "The Laughing Gnome". A 1975 UK issue swapped in a Young Americans photo for the cover.
