Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars: The Motion Picture Soundtrack
This live album captures David Bowie at Hammersmith Odeon in London on 3 July 1973, the last night of the Ziggy Stardust Tour. RCA released it in 1983 to accompany the film of the same name, though the recording had already been doing the rounds among fans as a bootleg called His Masters Voice – Bowie and the Spiders From Mars' Last Stand.
It matters because of what happens on stage. It marks the last concert Bowie played as Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane, and before the final song he told the crowd it was the last show they would ever do. Many listeners took that to mean Bowie himself was stepping away. Hearing it now, you get the sound of a character being retired in public, a pivotal moment between the glam years of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane and the very different records that followed.
