Sound + Vision
Sound + Vision was David Bowie's first box set, released on 19 September 1989 by Ryko Analogue. It arrived as the rights to his catalogue from before 1983, originally issued through Phillips/Mercury and RCA, returned to Bowie and his former management company, MainMan. Rykodisc had approached him in 1988 about reissuing his albums on CD, and he agreed, which led to this collection.
It sits at an interesting point in his story, between the commercial peak of the mid-eighties and the more experimental turn that followed in the nineties. The set draws on art rock, pop rock and soul, and it offered a way into the earlier decades of his work at a time when that music was being reclaimed. Its commercial reception bears that out: by April 1990 it had sold over 200,000 copies, a remarkable figure for a set priced at $50 to $60.
