Pin Ups
Pin Ups is David Bowie's seventh studio album, released on 19 October 1973 by RCA. It is a collection of covers, built from songs by 1960s bands who shaped him as a teenager, among them the Pretty Things, the Who, the Yardbirds and Pink Floyd. Bowie gives them a glam rock and proto-punk treatment. The record was put together as a stop-gap for his label, arriving just six months after Aladdin Sane, with a cover of the Merseys' "Sorrow" as the lead single.
It was made at the Château d'Hérouville in France over July and August 1973, soon after the Ziggy Stardust Tour ended and the Spiders from Mars split was announced. Mick Ronson and Trevor Bolder return, with Aynsley Dunbar on drums, and the tension in the room can be heard in the playing. It was the last album Bowie co-produced with Ken Scott, and the cover pairs him with Twiggy. It topped the UK chart, and some now rank it among the best cover albums.
