The Next Day
The Next Day is David Bowie's twenty-fifth studio album, released on 8 March 2013. It arrived a decade after its predecessor, following years in which he had stayed out of public view after a heart procedure in 2004. Recorded in New York between May 2011 and October 2012 with co-producer Tony Visconti, it was made in secret, with everyone involved signing non-disclosure agreements. The band included Earl Slick, Gail Ann Dorsey, Gerry Leonard and Sterling Campbell.
Its announcement came with "Where Are We Now?" on Bowie's 66th birthday, catching fans and press off guard. The album is mostly art rock, nodding to his glam and funk years, with bleak lyrics about tyranny and violence drawn from English and Russian history. It reached number one in the UK, his first since 1993, and number two in the US. Critics hailed it as his best work in decades. The sleeve cleverly defaces the "Heroes" cover.
