1.Outside: The Nathan Adler Diaries: A Hyper Cycle
Outside is David Bowie's twentieth studio album, released in September 1995. It reunited him with Brian Eno for the first time since the Berlin Trilogy of the late 1970s. The pair drew on outsider and performance artists, and Bowie imagined a society in which "art crimes", murder among them, had become part of life. The story, shaped partly by Twin Peaks, follows the detective Nathan Adler as he investigates the death of a 14-year-old girl in Oxford Town, New Jersey. Spoken interludes and diary entries in the booklet fill in the characters.
The music ranges across art rock, industrial rock, jazz, electronica and ambient. It arrived at the height of Britpop and divided critics, though many rated it his best work since Scary Monsters. It reached number 8 in the UK. "Strangers When We Meet" and the Pet Shop Boys remix of "Hallo Spaceboy" were UK hits. The planned sequels never appeared, but its ideas fed into Earthling.
